a prayer for Colombia

Tuesday, September 27th, 2016

Yesterday Colombia’s government and Farc rebels signed a historic peace deal, bringing to an end a 52 year conflict, which has claimed 260,000 lives and displaced eleven million people. It’s a day of celebration in the Sanctuary, as well as in Colombia, because for the last four years this peace process has come onto our prayer board again and again…. at first it seemed to voice only an unlikely, left-field hope but now…

a-prayer-for-colombia

On Sunday, the general population will vote on whether to ratify yesterday’s peace-deal and – if they do – then  the hard work of national forgiveness and re-building can really begin.

Colombia want to send a message to the world – fighting is not the way to win, and we pray that they will be heard in the places that most desperately need to grasp this truth and to believe that peace is not only possible – but essential – for the nations experiencing the most entrenched conflicts of our time.

We also pray that all Colombians will be able to do the hardest thing of all, described so poignantly by the Farc rebel leader –  that they will be able to ‘disarm their hearts’. It is these words that have inspired our prayer for Colombia today – one, we hope you will join us in at this key time:

A prayer for Colombia

Oh Lord our God, source of all life
and every gift that is good –
how can we praise you for this?
For weapons laid down
and pens taken up to draw out
a clear and peaceful path ahead;
for fists unclenched
and opened out
to shake the hands of those they once threatened.

Oh Lord our God, source of all wisdom
and every decision that brings shalom –
how can we thank you for this?
For leaders who realise
that the hardest work lies ahead
as Colombia seeks to forgive and re-build;
and for a nation longing
for a fighting, competing world to hear
that their long years of conflict only made everyone lose.

Oh Lord our God, source of all reconciliation
and every relationship that is right –
can we raise our faith to ask you for more?
Let every vote marked down
by a precious, Colombian hand
be matched by a disarmed heart
ready to voice the mourning that must be heard;
to be generous with forgiveness, repentance and restitution;
and most of all, to move towards “enemies” with love.

a peace-builder’s prayer

Saturday, September 3rd, 2016

Today we turned our large A65-facing window into a dry-stone wall. Not to shut people out of course! But to inspire drivers and passers-by to join in with building peace through prayer and action.

peace builder window

The window also contains Isaiah 61:4 and a specially writen prayer inspired by dry-stone wall building that you can use in other contexts too…

A peace-builder’s prayer

Master-Builder, I come with work-ready hands
to craft peaceful communities with you.
Word by word, action by action,
help me persist in choosing what is constructive
to build others up and bring rough edges together for good.
And most of all Lord, give me courage to leave space
between what I lay in place, inviting your Spirit to enter in,
making all I build strong and flexible enough to stand and remain.

The window – and prayer – were inspired by a time of prayer earlier this summer (which also inspired this creative resource designed to help people pray about building peace) in which we focused on God as Peace-Maker and built our own mini dry-stone wall in prayer.

It’s great to be able to share what God showed us to so many people, and in such different ways…

(The beautiful artwork raising our sights beyond the wall is an original piece by Barbara Macnish, which was originally created for the cover of our album: Moving with his heart. Find out how you can order CDs or download the songs for free here)

made the grade?

Thursday, August 18th, 2016

On results day for so many young people across the UK, and following what came out of our prayer time at the start of exam season, and our prayer time for them this morning, we wanted to share this prayer so we can all pray with and for them about what matters most:

A prayer for those getting exam results

For all those asking:
“are my grades enough?”
Or even “am I enough?”
Father, let nothing drown out your truth:
“You are loved just as you are;
you are worth so much more
than the sum of your marks,
achievements or ambitions.”

And for all those celebrating
the satisfaction of reaching or exceeding
the goals they – or others around them – set,
Father, let them still hear your truth:
“You are loved for who you are;
you are worth so much more
than the sum of your marks,
achievements or ambitions.”

And for all those who feel
their grades define their future
or determine their path,
Father, help them to see
that it is your love that defines them
and determines their future
and that you are for them, and with them
and ahead of them with hope.

prayer stations inspired by psalm 119

Wednesday, July 27th, 2016

At the Sanctuary, one of the stimuli for our daily prayer rhythm is the psalms. We cycle around them, taking a different one each day. Psalm 119 is the longest, but we are always delighted when it comes round! It is so rich and full – we’re big fans. When it came round last week, Jonny Rudd was the pray-er leading our morning session. He created this series of five prayer stations inspired by different sections of the psalm. We loved them, so we wrote them up to share in the hope they will bless you too.

We describe Simply Surrendered as the Sanctuary’s journey song – or song of ascent – and it is dedicated to our first Chair of Trustees and vital supporter, Anne Garside.

It’s a song which rings with the sound of faith, trust and wonder that characterised the season of the Sanctuary’s set-up that it was written in. It’s very special to us and we hope it will bless you too.

creative idea for praying about building peace

Monday, July 11th, 2016

This creative prayer idea resource for praying about building peace was inspired by God being the ultimate Peace-maker. Together we examined how peace is built – and the hard work and counter-cultural hearts that often go into achieving it – and then prayed for peace to be built in our communities and the whole of the UK given the atmosphere surrounding the EU Referendum campaign, Brexit outcome and resulting context. But you could use this resource to pray for peace-building in any place or situation.

creative idea for praying for protection

Friday, July 8th, 2016

We’ve uploaded a new creative idea resource, inspired by Psalm 91, which we found incredibly powerful in praying for protection over refugees, but could be used to intercede about people in any dangerous context:

prayer points for such a time as this

Monday, June 27th, 2016

Since Friday’s EU Referendum result was announced, our headlines have been full of momentous news as the impact of the decision to leave the EU reverberates around the UK. At such a time of shaking, it’s more important than ever that we – the people of God – remember to trust in him. He alone is our unshakeable foundation, the only true solid rock  for ourselves, our nation, and every nation to build on.

Europe sanc map

As we respond to the following headlines from the last few days, and the current and emerging situation in the UK and beyond, including:

  • the Brexit result itself and its direct implications for our nation
  • the ramifications for the EU, Europe and the rest of the world of this result
  • the resignation of the UK’s Prime Minister, David Cameron
  • ongoing resignations and leadership struggles within the Labour Party and shadow cabinet
  • continued instability in the financial markets, here in the UK and worldwide
  • divisions within the UK, from the individual household up to the national level – and everything in between
  • a sharp increase in racist abuse and threats, especially towards EU citizens currently living in the UK.

the following areas for urgent prayer are coming into focus. Please join us over the next few days and weeks in:

  • praising God that he is constant, faithful and totally reliable, choosing to trust in him always
  • praying for reconciliation in damaged relationships at every level – between families, friends, churches, communities, the regions and nations of the UK, EU member states, and every nation in Europe and worldwide
  • interceding for an end to racist attacks and militant nationalism
  • asking God to raise up strong, visionary and righteous leaders in all spheres – but especially in government – and to give them huge wisdom
  • crying out that people would turn to God in their confusion, fear or anxiety and that they would receive his hope, comfort and love
  • asking for God’s protection for the most vulnerable in our society, especially those who will be hardest hit and least able to cope with the predicted economic downturn
  • lifting those whose current work or situation is directly reliant on EU funding or other arrangements
  • thanking God for the beautiful diversity of nations and cultures across the world, and praying for any nations and international people groups that are likely to be negatively affected by the UK’s decision
  • praying for God’s light and hope to deliver and lift any fellow Christians who are feeling particularly weighed down with a sense of heaviness or despair following the events of the last few days, particularly if this is preventing them from praying or discouraging them in their work to spread the gospel and/or bring about justice and peace in this nation or internationally
  • praying for the church in the UK – and across Europe – to arise and be distinctive by:
    • repenting of where we have put our trust in the things and systems of this world ourselves, rather than hoping in God
    • demonstrating a healthy way to lament or express righteous anger where needed
    • showing that unity and diversity can be embraced together through the love of Christ
    • choosing to be peace-makers, visionaries and active, sacrificial agents for change in our nations and beyond
    • boldly witnessing to the sure and certain hope we have in Christ in all situations.

lighthouse blessing window 2 - low resLord Jesus,
glorious, shining Light of the World,

will never walk in darkness
but instead thrive in your nourishing, life-giving light.

and ask for your light of life
to lead us forward in love, reconciliation and courage.

Today,
as our government faces the challenges of momentuos change,
we pray for your wisdom for our MPs and civil servants
and ask for your light of life
to lead them forward in humility, understanding and hope.

Today,
as our European and other international neighbours
also face uncertainties and challenges
we pray for your presence to surround them
and ask for your light of life
to lead them forward in peace, stability and grace.

vital new resource for EU Referendum prayer

Wednesday, June 1st, 2016

We’ve just published a vital new collection of prayer resources – for the UK and Europe on and around the EU Referendum (Thursday 23 June). Designed to be completely non-partisan, and to serve Christians seeking to pray about their and others’ decision-making, it includes comprehensive prayer points, a written prayer and a set of eight creative prayer stations. Please do make use of any or all of it that might help you pray at this crucial time for the UK and Europe.

Europe sanc map

The prayer stations within this resource have been created for the Sanctuary’s prayer vigil on the day of the Referendum itself – so if you’re local, do join us before or after voting. But we decided to advance publish them today – on the 1 June – so that others could use them over the next few days, or organise their own vigil on the day of the Referendum too.
